Is the time right for subspecialties in developing countries?

The way how subspecialities in ophthalmology are addressed in developing countries varies depending on local socio-economic and political issues. The development of primary, secondary and tertiary health care centers including community based rehabilitation activities are important structures to improve medical education and patient care. An overview will be given from the African, South-American and Southeast Asian experience.
